It's really a shame because these sorts of expectations wouldn't have been had the author not been so obnoxious about it. Visually, it's really damn good and there's much to appreciate with the symbolisms and all. Conceptually, it's also good and the ending can be good, too --- as a concept.
(Wait, oops, sent the reply too early. Anyway---) But the story fails to deliver in every aspect in between which should justify the end of the journey. The ending precisely feels so disconnected from the story because it had to abandon a lot of plot points and strong foundation for it to work out and end in a few chapters.
