the plot tldr is that lum, an oni species alien princess comes to earth one day, and during a competition meets a teenage boy named ataru and misunderstanding him thinking he’s purposing to her, she falls ‘hard’ for him to put it lightly (he becomes her darling onward)
(originally lum wasn’t even a main character but rather a one time only character but due to being so popular the author kept her in onward)
but seeing as how ataru prior to lum’s arrival had a girlfriend, ataru is understandable upset since lum forces herself into his life and ataru’s own girlfriend later dumps him for another guy
(I prefer ataru’s manga self because he actually had the balls to outright at one point tell lum no and that she wasn’t his girlfriend, plus ataru in the manga just feels more likeable and not as one note)
see, ataru is a bit of a complicated character in the sense of he’s afraid of commitment understandably at only 17 and he may openly flirt often with girls much to lum’s own displeasure, but prior to lum arriving he was the one in the past who asked out all the girls and was almost always rejected, so with lum? ‘she’ was the one who pretty much technically asked ‘him’ out this time and he’s more then aware that if she really wanted, she could leave at any given time
add onto the fact that again, he’s 17 and doesn’t want to settle down yet, and the fact he’s just an unlucky guy in general and is more then self aware that most people don’t like him and his own so called friends all use him, especially when lum comes into the picture
to conclude, I would always recommend the original 80’s manga, the ova’s and I believe 6? movies to watch after the original anime
don’t bother with the recent reboot, the animation itself isn’t bad at all but.. it doesn’t have the charm the original series oozed with, plus they cut alot of original content and changed a few noticeable things in the reboot that.. yeah just isn’t the same
the voice acting in the dub and sub in the reboot is great! but again, nothing will beat the original voices, y’know?
also the bbc itself once dubbed the original series in such a stupid but charming hilarious way
