The fall of fiction

Jinxo April 5, 2026 5:26 pm

Let’s hope my title can be interpreted correctly.

As I stated I feel like the genre of manhwa and manga has fallen of recently you can even consider anime to have fallen of too. Whenever I try look for a anime or manhwa or manga nothing meets the standard of all the past manhwas and anime’s. For example anime was fallen off massively like if u look on Crunchyroll you will see majority are just reincarnation stories but written so poorly like they’re wannabe mushoko tensei rip offs. We can even see it in historical manhwas like so many of the reincarnation stories are so repetitive and even boring. Like it can be repetitive but why is it so poorly written.

I was thinking about the psychological manhwas specifically not BL centred but they have fallen off so bad or maybe the better term is that they don’t even get made. Some great ones were:

1)Bastard
2)Save me
3) girl on trial
4) stealing her place (fairly recent but still really good)
4) secret alliance

Maybe this list is biased because I just really liked them but still they really don’t be making manhwas like this anymore. Like I’ll scroll through this app late at night where a few years ago I could find a good read to binge but now I just gotta end up going to sleep instead of binging a series. Like is this a skill issue? Like where can I find some good reads because these stories aren’t like how the used to be. Also give me some Jose is like firefly wedding or smt like LET ME FEEL SMT from reading like I did a few years ago ahhhh.

Absolutely. Manhwas feel recycled, mangas are short term content, and anime feels sloppy.
I've been trying to read older manhwas and mangas but its so sad to see newer things go to waste.

"Mushoku tensei ripoff" bro mushoku tensei isn't even that good lmao not the first and the last either. I'll agree to the rest but honestly the fall was already a decade ago or so

art platforms being owned by mega capitalist companies will lead to the death of art

l*z**n and other platforms are known to push their authors to change the pace of the story, add inflammatory bs and everything to make the audience stick to said work
even companies who started small, hosting works of individual artists are now just publishing bs (hello t*ppas?? what happened to them)
especially with how easily accessible those works became, the companies want to beat as much money out of the dead horse, this applies to the other media you mentioned too

novel readers have been ringing the bells to warn yall about this years prior

you will have better luck reading older works or shounen ai if you want bl

Mushoku definitely isn’t that great but I made that point due to it being like one the most popular reincarnation in that sense of magic systems etc

Thank you for this insight! Funny enough I’ve actually switched to books specifically the fantasy genre just to feel smt from fiction. I’m not that into BL matter of fact but if u have any old recs pls do share!

I’m guessing it’s either that they’re much shorter than manhwas and that they give short term pleasure

Genuinely very sad I miss when manhwas were so great and unique such as in the historical genre we had manhwas like my in-laws are obsessed with me, whale star, how to get my husband on my side P.S I did drop bc I got bored of waiting after the haitus but it rlly did have a good start. Then we also had amazing modern stories such as operation pure love which sadly had a rlly bad progression and even seasons of blossoms which was a story which was one the most impactful manhwas.

The fall of anime gets me a little sad I have to say because I remember being like 12 waiting for weekly episodes of stories such as AOT, MHA to come out and watching Jjk during quarantine times and watching demon slayer both at home and in the cinema. Even tho they were mainstream it was one of those animes that just can’t have the emotions replicated. Even watching shojous such as my ouran host club, kamisama kiss, fruit basket had me fantasising about love like that when I myself stay farrr away from experiencing relationships in general, it was nice being able to experience the emotions from anime as nerdy as it sounds.

I won’t discredit the newer anime’s/manhwas that have been made such as the adaption of apothecary diaries which was amazing, we have stories such as the flowers bait which came from web novels which I personally find enjoyable, we got the CSM movie adaptation which had me in tears and even the anime TAMON b side which I would have to say is the anime of 2026 for the shoujo girls.

I feel as if in the near future, fiction such as anime and manhwas won’t be as impactful like how we found it as these corporations genuinely care about getting their pockets filled rather than caring about the viewers enjoyment.truly sad

Short term content is a popular format with manga since a long time ago. It's tied to the publishing industry in japan and most content for BL and romance magazines iirc operate on a monthly basis or longer. They prefer enough content for 1 volume
