So... in the novel, we find out that Maxi and Rosetta are actually half-sisters, and their mothers we're also both sisters that come from a very prestigious and royal bloodline. However, the women in that bloodline were known to have difficulties getting pregnant, and if they did succeed, they suffered severe issues due to having a weak body. Both mothers suffered at the hands of the Duke, cuz he ruthlessly and constantly pushed them like broodmares to have sex to produce of an heir. Both mothers eventually did have children, but they were girls. I can't remember if the Duke abused the mothers for not producing a male child, but both mothers died, and Maxi's mom died giving birth to her. The Duke apparently ran through that royal bloodline's women like toilet paper. Every time he ended up killing one he went to the next sister in line. Why that royal family never questioned him for the deaths of their daughters is beyond me. (My memory is fuzzy of the details, I read the novel a few years ago)
