The thing is, she really put all her heart into writing the “emotional separation of JoIan”. Both of them were crying and she even added the “what could have been” with the almighty narrator, clearly marking chap 98 as the climax of the story.
Jo also made the choice to let Ian go, but if he hadn’t stopped Ian from looking back, they could’ve had all those “what ifs.” Ian’s choice isn’t as simple as “he loves Tj more than Jo.” All of his actions and decisions are deeply rooted in his trauma, fear, and guilt. And let’s not forget, Ian literally got shot on his way to Jo, so of course all his fears intensified and pushed him to make that final decision.
But instead of making the TjIan reunion more emotional and convincing, she used the 2-year timeskip as an excuse and treated chaps 99-100 like an afterthought to chap 98. That’s why those chapters feel off. They lack emotional authenticity and connection. It honestly feels like she didn’t even care that much about the EG, because somehow the final chapter still ended up being more about Jo lol.
At this point, what really lingers for me isn’t who the endgame is, but the missed once-in-a-lifetime love between Jo and Ian.
I heard a quote in a film last night that sums up Ian and Jo. “Maybe we weren’t meant to be. Maybe we were meant to have been.”
Ian needed that relationship with Jo to make him see the possibilities of his life. He realized what a healthy relationship could look like. He always loved TJ, I’m not a fan but it’s not my story. He just needed TJ to be in a non toxic place, which he is now.
