it’s quite old and dated at this point since the original manga came out and ran in the late to end 70’s and the original anime ran from the early to mid 80’s with its respective ova’s and I believe 6 movies afterward?

but it’s a classic for a reason and influnced the anime industry to this day and is still beloved especially in japan with how much it engrained itself into japan’s own culture even in the present

urusei yatsura, you might semi know it already since it’s original theme song went viral a few years back, alongside it’s recent modern reboot

to summarize its story, lum is an alien princess, an oni to be exact who comes to earth one day and meets ataru, an unlucky and quite flirty with girls and perverted 17 year old teenager

(lum was actually originally suppose to be only in a few chapters, but due to being so unexpectedly popular was permanently in the story onward and pretty much immediately took ataru’s own place as the main character and face of the franchise entirely)

in a competition between the two, she misunderstands something ataru’s girlfriend in the crowd says to him (aka if ataru wins, she’ll marry him) and lum think’s he’s purposing to ‘her’ thus falls hard for him and declares he’s now her darling and pretty much forces herself into his life after that, living with him and his family

(no really, lum is infamous for calling ataru darling while rarely calling him by his actual name)

ataru understandably is pretty upset for quite awhile, and it doesn’t help that his own girlfriend dumps him at one point for another guy either

so ataru being ataru often will flirt around with other girls usually in front of lum, making her jealous which in results in her more often then not zapping him with her powers

however, ataru is a bit of a complicated character as he doesn’t actually ‘hate’ lum, he shows outright quite a few times in the series even if he can’t ever physically say he loves her that he does care deeply for her over and over

he’s just a 17 year old kid who’s not used to ever actually being properly loved or accepted for ‘himself’ since all the girls he ever seeked out prior to lum rejected him, but lum? she was the first and only girl to actually love and seek ‘him’ out

add onto the fact that he knows lum can leave at any given time, and that all his own so called friends don’t actually give a damn about him and use him, especially when lum comes into the picture

he’s afraid of commitment and doesn’t want to settle down anytime soon understandably

to conclude, don’t bother with the recent reboot in my opinion, they cut and removed alot of chapters and what not from the original manga, plus it doesn’t have the charm the original had

credit where it’s due though, the music in both the original and reboot is actually really good

(even if I still majorly prefer the original over the reboot that sounds too poppy and modern at times)
