Yep that's how it goes. Ugly people are judged negatively more often on average, whether in a factional story or not, would you believe it. This type of man is no one's dream husband, or rather most people grow out of that delusion by the time they gain an actual consciousness at 16?-ish.

Not all the world building and messaging about the deeper implications of the corruption of the rich going riiight past your head.
If you can't understand how disgusting the ignorance of the powerful is then you'll have trouble seeing ML as anything but a monster; and will ignore that he is a fully realized character instead of the antiphysis of whatever your ideal love interest is.
TL;DR: basically, a man sees a stunning lady, never comes up to her, instead makes up a romanticised version of her in his mind, deems himself unworthy, goes through to hell to “get on her level”, then realises she’s not what he imagined her to be but someone he despises, rage quits and concocts a revenge plan, finally courts and marries her with the intent of revenge and latent obsession with her, contributes to a coup and death of the lady’s parents, earns a position of power, turns 180 degrees and gives her cold treatment for three years till she musters up courage and learns he allegedly never loved her, lets her go and divorce him only after she lost it eventually and tried to end it multiple times, still keeps tabs on her after that despite promising to cut all ties, gets involved in her life to “protect her”, says they can’t be together, yearns for her still, gives everyone including himself mixed signs about their bond, realises he should not have harmed her, says he does not deserve her again, wants to redeem himself, gets lucky, happy end.
let’s all stay sober minded and not get our delusions get the best of us……..
