I really love stories like this where the protagonist somehow got involved to a certain person's (they know but not personally) death, so now it's kinda their responsibility. I just like the learning process when the dead person wasn't actually who they were before they died (in this story, a jerk), because everyone has nuances— we're not just good or bad, we're people with flaws and we all have our own internal struggle we never really tell anyone.
X is seen as someone inconsiderate and narcissistic, but there's actually a root cause for it and he's so much more than that.
