the latest chapter (99) details what waka was up to in ahu’az’s lair. waka kills yakou, the blind lady, and approaches ahu’az. she then tells the god yakou’s plan was to get tokinaga to take her back to the time her mother was alive by holding waka captive, but he never came to the lair (what yakou doesn’t know is the tokinaga’s power only affects him and he didn’t come bc he physically couldn’t due to his legs falling off) waka then asks if ahu’az if they want to go back to a different time before they were a god. i think this is waka trying to reclaim all the pieces of her that were given to each ipo by nisroca. this is also maybe backed up by the panel where she’s smiling while punching yakou bc she looks identical to a panel of orokapi wayy before, i think this is just meant to symbolize that each ipo is a facet of waka
now the general plot: the first waka, the witch who ages really slowly, wanted tokinaga to fall in love with her. she slowly tries to manipulate him to fall in love with her as a result of her own mental illness and it culminates to the scene where she lures him into the freezing ocean. when he snaps of it, she realizes tokinaga as he is currently will never love her, so she summons nisroca and asks him to fulfill her wish “i want the people i love to love me back the same way” ( my theory is that this wish also includes shion not just tokinaga)
the way nisroca goes about fulfilling this wish is like this: first, he traumatizes tokinaga to the point where he can only get sexually aroused by massive calamities/violence. then nisroca feeds the plankton at the bottom of the ocean a different part of waka to make the plankton grow into the IPOs we see now. the gods also have a fear of a “man” (tokinaga) and have a vested interest in killing that man. alula (who was fed waka’s heart) is set by the other gods to kill tokinaga. therefore, alula has become the world ending calamity, the type of force tokinaga is sexually attracted to, and can now fulfill waka’s wish in a very messed up way.
tokinaga has told this whole story to orokapi after kapi healed his legs. if you recall, the reason why tokinagas legs fell off was because the old man wauke who can turn into explosive gases tried to bomb the institute as a distraction so the little girl kurumi can lead waka to ahu’az. tokinaga kept using his powers to prevent it but ultimately failed to stop waka
