I think the author was intending for the mom and Romi to have a sexual connection from the start but probably backed out of it.
He literally said/thought he shouldn't take advantage, then took advantage. Then he wished he was her ONLY support. Now he's talking moving with her and taking advantage of her stress to push a relationship, making her codependent.
Well it is f up where the part he is taking advantage of the situation ngl. But in my perspective, atleast he is there for the FL compared to Romi who had left FL when she needed comfort the most... if the 2nd ML wasn't there, I think FL will become more miserable... this is my opinion in comparing both situations :)
