I think he saw himself on her on the past, and how much he wanted someone to reach out to him in that manner. So he projected how he wished he has been treated on her, both out of kindness and perhaps he did develop a crush eventually. I think that, if he did like her, the reason he never told her was because he knew he would be dead, and so it would be pointless.
Now that she is in fact trying to her closer to him, he’s receptive, but also closed off. Before he knew she had high walls and by actively being kind to her , and her not being receptive at all, he could feel better about himself and also never be at risk of her breaking down his, since she didn’t care. Now she is approaching deeper parts of him and that makes him cautious and reveal more about what he actually feels. So he is more taciturn and quiet.
Now as to why he says he doesn’t want to be her friend, i found very curious. Was he already planning on dying? Was he afraid she would get too close? I think so. He is afraid of being truly known and thus having to confront himself.
