    I noticed with a lot of translations a lot of the time sister or daughter turns into brother or son

    I don't think you're missing anything he probably did say 'sister'

    probably a gender neutral term before being translated and some "translators" cant be bothered to read context clues

    It could be a typo, but it could also mean brother in law, technically? Sister makes more sense contextually though.
