Yes, I agree that some of the earlier chapters are really really bad. I wanted to drop it, but I kept reading. I'm about to say spoilers for later chapters, it doesn't have to change your mind and you can still drop it, but it has made me seen him in a better light

It's explained in one of the chapters, the originally, fl former father was going to marry her off to the ml, but made him pay huge prices for her. The king only saw her as a pawn, and raised her to believe that her only purpose was to live for the kingdom. However, she was originally happy to marry him, in fact, they mutually loved each other. Then, after accepting all the treasures ml gave to them, the king cancelled the marriage plans and was going to marry her off to a different king, stabbing ml in the back. She was devastated, but ready to do so due to the brainwashing her father had instilled in her.

Before it could happen though, her brother abandoned his kingdom to save her, and went to tell the ml of the plans to save his sister. The ml came in and destroyed the capital, burning it to the ground, and turns out the country that had conspired with this plan had backstabbed her father as well, hoping that the two countries would ruin each other. At this time though, she was still brain washed, and didn't want to listen or hear any explanations that the ml had. She began to feel more hatred and got more twisted, even though it was only done to save her.

In fact, she's learned of this already, by reading history books about what truly happened to her previous kingdom. She actually learns that the current ml is the reincarnation of her first husband, and accepts him after that, after seeing how much he's trying. She remembers times that he tried before as well, but her heart and mind were too twisted in her first life, which is why she sees her descendent as so mature and wise for her age, because she couldn't see things in the same way as back then.

Was ml twisted in what he said and did to her as well? Yes he was, I'm not defending him in any way. However, both of them became twisted in different ways, either not knowing how or wanting to speak the truth, or not listening and ignoring what they hear, it twisted both of them to do things and act in ways they didn't want to.

So, for those of you who still would like to drop it, that's perfectly fine and I understand completely. I just wanted to leave this detailed comment so that for those who are on the fence can make an informed decision before doing so.
