this isnt the complete detail and its been a while since ive read the novel so forgive me if i get some details wrong or i forgot something.
amon reallyyty wanted nain to get used to seeing humans die. nain used to be a human before he became amon's mate. amon was already worshipped as a god even before and his followers actually hurt nain, which is why amon turned nain immortal (i forgot the details here but that's the general gist of it) so he wouldn't die. because of this, nain lived for a long time and witnessed his friends and family die before him. which made him really sad, at some point he wanted to die as well. which is why amon is using those incense to make nain forget about his past, and wouldn't be depressed anymore. unfortunately for nain, he never seemed to get used to seeing human die despite amon's efforts which would lead to an even bigger conflict later on.
