What happens is basically a escape gone wrong, in a sense that ilay does rescue him and becomes a terrorist because of it but xinlu intervenes somehow and taeui had to choose to go with xinlu (ilay interpreted this REALLY bad) anyways, ilay and taeui apparently had a moment during the rescue too. I only read the novel starting after this when ilay catches/meets taui again (after he escapes xinlu) so take my words about the rescue with a grain of salt.
