i could be completely wrong but i think betrayal happened and blondie was angry but was reaching the conclusion that his boyfriend is totally socially misunderstanding and wasn't meaning much evil with that (he does say on the after years timeline that he gets it that boyfriend didn't mean harm, but was still hurt), but i think aunty threatened blondie with his boyfriend and he took the chance to break up with boyfriend on the surface because of the writing-about but actually more to take him out of his aunt's sight and make sure he doesn't return on his own as he would've doen if blondie would've been honest and told him about aunty. but I'd need a reread to make sure of anything and I'm not doing that until we have a semblance of resolution between these two dufuses
I hope he heals from the family trauma!!! I finally understand why they separated!!
1 to protect him from her aunt
2 to get revenge on his family and go to uni together
3 the betrayal scared him into thinking that the aunt had something to do so he left
