and why do these authors always insist on the main character being a kid for like half of the story?

Her eye powers made her permanently sunlight sensitive. It sucks, but at that time, sunglasses weren't a thing yet. And also, most of the shit that happens in her future happened bc of bullshit from her childhood! Of course a bunch of stuff that we see will also be from that period of time!!

everyone looks older expect for mc who looks malnourished & petite compare to her peers after that time skip ..
