It seems he suffered from some mental illness as he neared his death. Not trying to excuse his actions but reasoning. As far as I remember he was a dutiful husband and genuinely loved his kids but as he exhausted himself he kept remembering Ludovika. Nobles have a duty so till that point it was kinda okay but then he met Shuri and everything went wrong.
