the novel explains the motivation for ml’s actions later during the backstory. all of this is basically a calculated revenge for what jiwook did to juyeon in the past. they’re both in the wrong, but yeah, this is just extreme.

summarizing it, juyeon and jiwook basically used to be friends before back in middle school. juyeon, at this point, was still a good kid and student with a respectable reputation in school. juyeon was attracted to jiwook (juyeon was much younger, afaik he was 14 when it all happened) which led to them hanging out more until it reached the point where juyeon was also hanging out with jiwook’s friends even though his mom didn’t like them (they were bullies and rebellious teens). the turning point of their whole dynamic was when juyeon agreed to drink alcohol to fit in with the rest of the group without knowing how low his tolerance was. he got drunk and everybody thought he was cute at first because of his drunken habits. after that juyeon got the chance to talk to jiwook alone, he got the courage to confess his feelings (cus of the alcohol). he told jiwook that he had been attracted to him ever since the start, among many other things. jiwook was grossed out and insulted him on the spot. juyeon cried and left not knowing that what he said would change his whole life forever. they weren’t friends anymore after that.
jiwook messaged juyeon to go to a place (i think it was a warehouse or something), in which juyeon complied and found jiwook and his friends waiting for him. their whole conversation, jiwook was basically insulting juyeon because of his sexuality, then he started sexually provoking him (something along the lines of gay people liking it when taking it up on the ass) until it led to them raping juyeon (yes, the whole friend group). after that they violated juyeon multiple occasions, almost everyday. there was one incident where they tied up and blindfolded juyeon in the bathroom and left him there with a vibrator inside him until the janitor found him there. juyeon lost the will to go to school all in all because of what they were doing. worse, jiwook and his friends were filming and taking pictures of it all.
making it short, the pictures were leaked throughout the entire school and jiwook even sent them to juyeon’s mom. that led to her losing her mind and basically getting hospitalized. after a while juyeon heard the news that jiwook had gotten badly injured during a fight, losing all his memories prior. juyeon still liked jiwook despite everything so he visited jiwook from time to time (i think.. i dont know but just know that he met with him after that).
during that time, juyeon asked jiwook what he would do if someone hit him, to which he responded that he would ‘hit back 10x worse.’ jiwook had given juyeon the idea to get revenge for everything he had gone through because of him.
