If the beast man was in love with the elf girl why did he try to make MC his mate ?

I'm assuming he was under the impression that he and the elf gal wouldn't meet again to keep their promise, and usually in a lot of fantasy settings with beastmen, they try to look for strong mates to produce strong children.
