Gunchan definitely knows how to teach. Also, Elian's relationship to Gunchan doesn't seem so weird if I think about from Elian's perspective. They are vampires, and the kin will also have long lives, at this point age, relations and gender aren't that of a big deal. Elian's character is not the most likable, but I do find him pitiful. Imagine being alive for hundreds of years, experiencing all kinds of bad things, and then a young human man thinks of you as a baby that needs to grow up. Gunchan is really something, he made the old and powerful pure vampire feared by everyone a manchild.
