putting the toxic part beside, this story tells two broken people to find new purpose to continue living

I think it’s because of abusive and toxic part of the story that we miss the “real”dialogue or interaction between Yugeon and Shinje that significantly changing or forming their relationship.

Woo Shinje was created in the lab, his life purpose is to enter the Mazzaroth and destroy the Almuten, then he could die. In his flashbacks, he was extremely hurt, injured to test his “limit” to stay sane and still could answer who is his enemy. Woo Shinje is treated as a weapon or a tool, not a human at the moment he was born. Even when he owns Erewhon, his subordinates (who aren’t in Team 1) are afraid of him because he holds a title as a S-Class hunter. Even Shinje himself doesn’t treat himself as a human, he just wants to die along with Almuten.

Shinje and other seme have been living like on edge to go rampant, if they lose control just for a moment. But after Shinje encountered Yugeon for the first time and forced him to give guiding, Shinje discovered that their sync rate is perfectly 100% and he went back to normal stage. Still, Shinje was wrong to assign Yugeon as a shared guide of Team 1, and treated him badly after that; humiliated Yugeon to strip, told him to bear with it when he must provide guiding to all of them at the same time, watched Yoo Chan bullied him at the breakfast table, did nothing and even joined the group sex that Yugeon didn’t want (even Taein also joined it after Heesu commanded Yugeon to give him a kiss), shamed Yugeon that he had sex with other seme as if Yugeon cheated in him. Shinje did all these like Yugeon is a tool for guiding, it’s the same way that everyone in the lab/ Center treated Shinje as a weapon tool and discarded him after he became useless. But both Shinje and Yugeon are human, they have feelings. In the story shows that there were hundreds of Guides that they hired before (Heesu said it), but all of them either went crazy or just run away. But Yugeon stays because his purpose is to save his older brother and his ability and capacity as a guide beyonds G rank as the story tells. Shinje once told Yugeon that even 2% sync rate between Esper and Guide is extremely rare, and this is the key point. Yugeon’s guiding ability can stabilize Shinje and other Espers’ condition, even when they are in the worst condition. (Their wounds are gone and go back to normal at the moment they have sex with Yugeon.) Yugeon can provide guiding to 4 Espers without going crazy and he can fully physically recover after that. (But he was exhausted and traumatized because it’s rape. Maybe he’s straight from the start too.) Even when they entered the Mazzaroth, he gave guiding to many injured Espers and he could give the rest of his guiding power to Shinje before he fainted.

His ability alone makes him special in Shinje and other Espers’ eyes. Shinje has started showing his favorite and affection; giving Yugeon flowers, sweets, and calling him by pet name. Yugeon shows his reactions, expressions to Shinje (that he has a sweet-tooth). I think those little interaction between them start to change from Esper and Guide to Shinje and Yugeon.

I see that many readers prefer and like Taein. Taein is a character who observes and watches everything from the side. He thinks and acts logically. He tries his best to restrain himself to hurt others because of his Esper ability or I would say he calculates every move or step to prevent the damage or worst case scenario. Don’t forget that he was there with Shinje at first to hold Yugeon tight, jerking him off and he also kissed Yugeon too. He even joined group sex and fucked Yugeon when Heesu commanded Yugeon to give Taein a kiss. He also had sex with Yugeon after drinks and Yugeon was drunk and mistook him as Shinje (calling him Commander). So, it’s not about who is the least asshole to be in love with. Taein is also a part of this toxic/ mistreated program toward a guide; Yugeon. The point is Shinje can’t stop other Espers to have sex with Yugeon either because they all agree from the start to use this “shared” guide together.

I think Shinje and Yugeon’s feeling toward each other begins to change and bend to emotional attached when Yugeon’s older brother died. Shinje jokingly asked Yugeon to kill him by cutting his head after they killed Almuten. Yugeon denied and said he can’t do that to another human being and this makes Shinje happy with joy because maybe this is the first time that someone sees him in a humanity way, not a weapon, not a tool, not a S-Class Esper, but as a person named Shinje. While Yugeon felt lost and he didn’t have any purpose left to continue his living after his brother’s death. Shinje asked him about simple things in the bath tub scene, what he likes and they make a promise to eat red bean bread, if they are alive after fighting with Almuten. It gives Yugeon another reason to continue his life and Shinje is that person who reminds him to stay alive. In my opinion, many readers miss this point that this simple thing means a lot to both of them; to treat another person as a human being and to continue living by finding the simplest thing to do.

Even thought Shinje said that he and Yugeon would die together while fighting with the last boss. He changed his words and demanded Yugeon to survive and left his side when they were close to the Alter.

I would say both of them make another person feel like a normal person, just a“human” at the end of the story. When Shinje just stepped out from a Commander position, and gave Erewhon to Taein instead, he’s just “Shinje”, not a weapon, not a S-class Esper, not a Commander of Erewhon. He is Shinje, a human being to Yugeon and everyone else.
