To me, in the cover she's treating them more as dogs. There's one faithful clinging to her master, resting obediently on her lap, while the other is starring affectionately into her master's eyes..earning a head scratch as a reward.
What's clever about the cover, is it illustrates perfectly the arrogance and ignorance of a typical person of wealth or power. Upon closer inspection, the image shifts to tell a different story.
Margot sits there stoically, as if she's in complete control. All the while, Peggy is reaching around to guide her blade, the blood of her crime drippong onto her skin toward her pure white clothes (leaving evidence of her guilt), and the look on Elise's face is less that of affection..and more that of pure amusement.
