in the side stories, you saw his father got infected right? and then when he went into a room he saw his mother, but there’s blood stain on her shoulder, so, meaning.. she’s also infected. that’s why you can see that he left the bldg and was bawling. －.－)

Zombies is my guess. In one flashback panel we see what might be his parents as zombies. They're trying to get to him through an open door. The apparence match at least.
