They are only 1 year apart… the MC was just too big for his age and the ML was too small for his age. They were the same kids just of different sizes..
the point is MC thought ml was a first grader and ml thought mc was a middle schooler but we learn in their backstories and earlier discussions of age they're only one year apart so 3rd and 4th grade
