The reason I can’t take Wet Sand’s story is that the stakes are laughably low and there’s no real consequence or tradeoffs for the characters’ actions. The Indomitable Champion side story though really blew me away not just because Hojoong and Ricky had amazing chemistry, but because all that senseless violence from the main story traumatized everybody, and the author fully portrayed the cause and effects of the characters making the worst decisions of their lives.
If Bakjjeundeuk wrote Wet Sand, who knows what kind of hell they would’ve put TJ and Ian through for fucking with the mafia. It’s actually annoying how little Doyak did with her story.
Yeah, the violence and assault in it really is no joke and I perfectly understand why people would be turned off. But I also think that the side story is incredible and can be read on its own without the main story. It’s still violent but it’s much more relevant to the plot and drives the point home that the characters are in incredibly dangerous situations and there’s real stakes for their choices.
I think that if you can handle classic Korean noir movies like Oldboy or the Vengeance films, then you can handle the Indomitable Champion side story.

I think Bakjjindeuk could write Wet Sand, easy, but Doyak could never write Indomitable Champion.
