Why should her assassin lie to her though? That's what I can't wrap my head around. Why would you lie to someone who is about to die anyway?
Was someone listening (coachman maybe?) whose sole role in this ploy was to hear the assassin blaming the duke and tell that to the other nobles?

I don’t think he k*lled her. I believe her death was meant to be a ploy, a sacrifice, to blame the duke for something as bad as k*lling the most beloved and beautiful princess of that kingdom! Her father and many of others feared the duke and had been trying to find ways to get rid of him so it makes sense that they were try to frame him for murder of an imperial member. What sad is that she obviously don’t know that or thinks that could be a possibility that her own family would throw her life away like that to get rid of someone they don’t like! I believe the duke had also decided to spare her feelings and avoided revealing any of that information to her. He may have somehow kept her alive but she ended up not tethered to her body but to him instead. Maybe he was going to release her soul and let her move on once he exposes their schemes. Because I'm not sure if her body is even alive anymore. It’s crazy to me that he don’t want her to find her body. Maybe it is alive but as a ghost she is easier to control, so he wants to keep her from re-entering her body. Could explain why he don’t want her to fall in love with him because he knows that all that he did, knows, and allowed to happen, is pretty bad and selfish of him!
