What even is this argument? Stories do not exist in a vacuum; the only case in which authorial intent is all that matters is if something never sees the light of day. Once a creator puts something out into the world, it ceases to be only about their vision or intentions.You cannot control what people think of your work, how they interpret it, or how it impacts them.
By your logic, yaoi is rape-free and nothing has ever been racist, homophobic, etc, because “the author didn’t mean it like that.” And that’s leaving aside the assumption that YOU somehow know the author’s intentions better than every other reader in the first place.
No, I'm just saying that the author didn't call it rape. And anyone who can't read fiction without perceiving it as a real world situation needs EXTENSIVE therapy. If you can't read something and decide for yourself that it's not okay in the real world without demonizing the fiction, there's something wrong with you. Should nothing be questioned if the author didn't mean it the way readers interpret it? Yeah, rape happens in the real world every day. And? Does that mean no one should be upset or angry when it happens in fiction? The entire point of consuming art and media is reacting to it; that's what comments sections exist. That's why people earn livings as reviewers and write theses and teach classes about the real-world significance of pieces of fiction. People get upset or excited about plot developments BECAUSE they care about a story. If gives a shit it means no one is invested in it, and I guarantee any creator would prefer the former.
If it doesn't bother you because it's fiction, then that's great, no one is trying to make you care or tell you not to like the story. A lot of people will be upset about it but keep reading to see how the story plays out, because shockingly you can still criticize things you enjoy. But it will ruin the whole story for some people and that's a totally fair reaction too.
But saying that people are upset because they can't separate fiction from reality is condescending as hell and IMO willful ignorance.
I'm very pro-author and true to the story, but what you've articulated seems to be superior what I based my orignal comment on, so i think I'll adjust my perspective. I appreciate the engagement.
