iirc...the priest doesn't actually mind, he's also just pretending. Also, they're not really friends, more like co-conspirators.
they started working hand in had after his daughter was condemned. he too has his fair share of problems to take care of before he can afford to care about anyone else. pretty realistic for a dark story like this
