I think because his parents don’t support the career he wants to do or his degree so it is stressful going back to a toxic family like that.
this isn't meant to be rude or anything but in chapter 2 when he's monologuing in his head you can literally see his mom crying over the fact he chose what he wanted for his career. "I went from the only hope of my family to it's biggest disappointment..." so I think it's safe to say it's hinted at that he was raised up or at least felt like he was raised up as an investment, maybe he just wants to choose himself over his family ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

maybe it'll have her reflecting, not having her son celebrate her birthday must have some sort of impact on her
