His inner monologue softened him considerably, while as in here they add things he never did and remove moments which shows his true feelings to the uke.
I agree his inner monologue added context, but he was still a mean, hard-headed SOB in the novel. He had so many opportunities to not be an asshole, and he just said, nah. Even the “sacrifice” he tried to make was selfish af.
I mean, yeah, I always thought he was a bit weird and a bit narcissistic at times, but you cannot deny that they removed so many scenes to make the seme look worse than he actually is. They removed the scene where, when Eugene passed out, Winston took care of and comforted him and instead replaced it with him, continuing even after the Uke passed out without care. And removed scenes to make Eugene look more delicate and winston more aggressive. And I don't understand how his sacrifice was selfish?
He would rather burn down the house with him and his mother in it than have an adult conversation and change his behavior to be a father to his children and respectful partner and/or co-parent to their other parent. That wasn’t HELPFUL for anyone but himself so he could feel like he made amends.
