June 2nd and we’re still dealing with this! Shipping delulu isn’t just “harmless fun”, it actually hurts the gay community in so many ways, and here’s exactly why:

It erases and neglects actual queer representation: You pour all your energy into shipping straight characters or platonic friends, while completely ignoring or sidelining canon gay characters and confirmed queer relationships. Those genuine representations are already rare, and instead of supporting them, you give all the attention to made-up ships, this makes it harder for proper LGBTQ+ stories and characters to get the visibility and appreciation they truly deserve.

It reduces queer identity to a mere fantasy or headcanon: By forcing romantic or gay dynamics onto characters who are explicitly straight or just friends, you treat queerness like something you just imagine for fun, rather than a real, legitimate identity and relationship type. This makes actual queer people and their experiences feel invalid, trivial, or like they’re just a “toy” for your entertainment.

It spreads hate and hostility toward the gay community: Because people force ships onto straight characters or friendships, people start associating queer fans with toxicity, and it creates a negative image of the whole community just because of these shippers. Because of shippers, creators choose “bromance” over actual representation: Writers and artists see how obsessed fans get with shipping anything even regular friendships. So instead of giving us proper, confirmed queer romances, they intentionally write vague “bromance” or use queerbaiting. They know they can get the same hype and attention without actually committing to canon gay relationships. We end up stuck with empty hints and fake vibes, while real representation gets replaced by cheap fan service that never goes anywhere.
