I barely finished reading this. The closer it got to the finale, the more boring it became.
If you came to read it for romance, you will be disappointed. If you came to read it for scheming and political intrigue, you will be disappointed. If you came to read it for interesting plot and characters, you will be disappointed.
If you came to read it just for the trope of reincarnation and ‘taking the male lead from the OG mc’ (which is so hard to fuck up), you will be disappointed.
This manhwa has so many problems and there are barely any positive things to say about it. There’s legit nothing good about this manhwa except for its gorgeous art style and hot characters.
The writing was so all over the place that I don’t even know where to begin, so I will try to start with its concept.
This is yet another manhwa that uses a ‘reincarnated into a book’ concept and does absolutely nothing with it. It’s only a tool to explain why the main character changes from villainess into this super smart, gentle yet manipulative person. However, the author truly took the most easy way and it came to bite them in the ass.
Kayena’s whole drive is to break free from her brother. Until he murders her babysitter that she has not met since she was a child in her first life. That’s when the author decided to deepen her character to show her struggles, how lonely she is… And it would’ve worked if it wasn’t a fucking reincarnation manhwa.
MC mentioned that in her second life her mom was a baker and she has no bad memories about that life. So where tf this whole agony over “everyone leaves me” coming from. The fact that she had a second life makes all of the current plot make no sense. I mean, author could’ve said that her second life was also miserable and how she had no one there either, but instead author tries their best to just make reader forget that she didn’t just transmigrated back in time, but had a second life and that this world is a book. Author did absolutely nothing with this idea and trope.
Don’t get me started on the characters. 99% of side characters’ personalities revolve around MC. And fuck most of the characters exist just to fucking exist. Wtf was up with the duke? Started writing him as this massive villain (who is obsessed with MC, of course) only to become completely irrelevant.
Talking about irrelevant: most of the characters in this manhwa. OG MC? Just there. Other servants that were getting built up for something more? Just there. Her little brother? Just there (they interacted TWICE in the whole manhwa and he is already willing to do anything for her). That blonde lady in waiting who was a sister to a guy who tried to become a minister? Why did she even exist. Why was she hired? She was just there and then disappeared.
Fuck. I just remembered the whole magician arc and why did that exist??? She goes to a magician (who ends up being obsessed with her), gets powers THAT SHE BASICALLY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH (all the things she did with her powers could’ve been done without them omg), introduced another villain (who becomes obsessed with her) that appeared twice and then immediately got locked up. All of this useless plot existed only to introduce angst of MC dying soon. But then the magician, that fell for her, sacrifices himself to give her a happy ending. How convenient. And fucking useless. Why the fuck did it even exist??? Why even introduce the brother????????? Why?????????
Romance in this manhwa is also ass. Male lead’s whole personality is just loving MC. He barely even appears, and when he does - MC pushes him away or avoids him. He is barely present or relevant. He legit is just THERE to exist. He barely helps her with anything, so when he is talking all big about protecting her and relying on him I was legit laughing. Like he is so useless. Just a pretty face to stare at. I, surprisingly, liked the brother (as a character, not romantic interest) and his dynamic with MC more than the male lead.
The whole plot with Regef is also stupid. They never explained why he was so cold to MC in their first life when the plot drives the point how codependent they both are with each other. They mentioned a ‘misunderstanding’ that drove them apart but what the fuck was the misunderstanding’???? Her falling for the duke while her brother was imprisoned? Him bringing her the head of his friend (or was it just a dream I don’t fucking know)???
God, this manhwa was just bad. I can keep going, but I don’t want to waste any more of my energy on this manhwa. It started interesting, but it’s just truly a nothing burger.
The only character that was interesting was Regef, but he has the misfortune of being in a hands of an author who just can’t write.
The whole manhwa felt like that one Moon Knight meme saying “random bullshit, go!”. Because most of the manhwa was literally just random bullshit to try make the plot interesting but failing miserably.
Most of the time reading this manhwa I kept asking myself “what the fuck is the point of this?” and the answer is almost always “there’s literally no point”.
