He did try to contact her before his career went downhill. She blocked him. He knew he hurt her and caused damage, that's why he stopped contacting her. He wasn't expecting her to do an interview to help clear his name, that's why he called her when she was at the airport. He was shocked, confused, and apologetic because she put herself on blast for him.
Waahh, it started out so well, and then it turned out ML was an egotistical, pathetic asshole... while his career was going well, he just let her go, didn't even try to get her back, and when everything started falling apart, all he could do was drink. In the end, she saved his ass, and only then did he decide to contact her, seriously? I'd tell him to get lost along with his eggplant.... Such a pity it was really good at beginning....
