Yes, I read the novel and he was so heavily drugged he doesn't remember how he spent his rut. He doesn't even remember it's MC he slept with all those years, only MC was the first one to realize it between them in the future. It's a bit ironic to say but yes ML kind of fell in love with MC because of him, not really on his scent because he couldn't even smell it most of the time.
