Hard disagree for a number of things. Jooha was always sassy and smart since the beginning. U can easily see this from the way he treated pilwon. He was naive and loved him, yes, but he didn't hold onto his delusions. That's a resilient character. 2nd, his personality was dampened by the considerable trauma he had to endure, plus he was emotionally tethered to pilwon. 3rd therefore the "change" was simply character progression from surviving victim to someone who takes charge of their life. Which in my *personal* opinion, is not as abrupt as you say.
Much of his life was spent surviving and that became the core of his personality, so I'm surprised that you didn't see that. At the end he was happy, and his personality became much more balanced (which, duh lol).
I finished the manhwa so I'm basing my opinion on what I've read.
Dooshik was always a badass. The reason he was kinda of the adorable goof was down to survival. He portrayed a character that helped him succeed. His character was the goofy yet sexy player at Peter Pan. A male host. Underneath he was a broken man that fought to survive. Once he fell in love he did his best to play that goofy guy so many men fell for in the past. Until he became that character just for Joonha. The golden retriever boyfriend. I think the dichotomy of both of his sides made him even more lovable.
I always see just these two scenes in my mind:
1. When he’s collecting shells at the beginning and is so “stupid” that he doesn’t know what pearls are, and then searches so frantically that he nearly dies.
2. When he’s eating at the restaurant and then tries to get out of paying.
To me, that’s a completely different character compared to what suddenly comes out in his words and actions.
He used to act first and think later. And that shifts completely—and, in my opinion, can’t be explained by his past facets. Because by the time of the revelation to the reader, those events had already taken place and thus shaped his development long ago… just because we learn about them later doesn’t mean he hasn’t already gone through them. That’s what makes it so inconsistent to me. The funny thing is, I actually like these manipulative, cold characters, which is why I had a hard time getting into the story—because this seme wasn’t like that at first. Now that he’s suddenly turned out to be like that (manipulative) after all, it really stands out to me—and just when I’d gotten used to the other type of seme, it’s surprising that he’s turned out to be that kind of character again. For me personally, it’s doubly—or even triply—strange. Unfortunately, it didn’t resonate with me emotionally or logically.
Smart ppl do dumb shit all the time lol ig what u would call inconsistent is js another aspect/flavor of his personality. I read the spin off and that dumbass stays dumb. You would be correct saying that there is no smooth character progression bcs thats js the duality in his personality. He's like a gojo type character.
tbf the serious stuff occured more often in season 2. Dooshik always did have a serious/calculating/sober side to him. When he was dealing with his mom, his time in prison, rejecting mafias. This all happened in the past prior to meeting Jooha. He flirted with ppl js to make him jealous too. He knows he's handsome and uses it to his advantage all the time. He just "hides" it well beneath a playful demeanor. If that's not manipulative idk what is. The reason why I said "aspect" was bcs i believe duality isn't black and white, and not so obvious sometimes. Im not saying this is peak manhwa but it's not that poorly executed either. It's a generous 4.5/10 for me

I don't remember ever posting a comment before. This story is just so utterly confusing that I can't help myself right now. This isn't a spoiler, but the protagonist—not “Pearl Boy”—is a completely different character compared to the beginning. Visually, he hasn't changed that drastically, but it's noticeable, and he's just developed a totally different personality. At first, he was kind of dumb and naive, but lovable, and suddenly he’s the most calculating, ruthless mafia gangster out there—but without a smooth transition. And yeah, little pieces of his past are revealed, but they still don’t explain why his personality was the complete opposite before, and that totally throws me off, and I just can’t bring myself to keep reading the story. I’m on chapter 47 now and just can’t get past it.
Is it just me who noticed this?!
