I’ve only read like 75% of the novel, but from my understanding, Ain was conceived from a one night stand between his mother and the Duke of the north, who did not know of Ain’s existence. He grew up in the south and very poor. In order to gain money and status, Ain prostituted himself and was sexually abused by Michel’s father. He eventually gained enough wealth and status to approach his father in the North and be welcomed into their family. When his father and step-mother died, Ain gained the title of Duke. Michel’s kingdom was struggling financially and basically pawned off Michel in exchange for money and alliance. Michel’s family didn’t care what happened to Michel, even permitting Ain to kill him if he desired. Ain planned to kill Michel immediately in an act of revenge against Michel’s family, but upon their first meeting, Ain concluded that killing him immediately would not be satisfying enough. Ain basically kept telling himself he would kill Michel as soon as Michel slipped up or proved himself to be just like every other noble who took advantage of him in the past. In reality, Ain was slowly falling for Michel. Ain treats him coldly, but is extremely possessive over him and even risks his life to protect him (all while swearing he’ll kill him later). The next season will be probably be pure angst, mostly of Ain neglecting Michel. i haven’t read it in a while though so it might not be accurate.
