Just finished Volume 2. Volume 1 is brutal and emotional but I found myself hoping for some kind of catharsis since the author said it would have a happy ending. It's a study on peer pressure and social hierarchy, which is reflected in the kids' lives outside of school, too. But even after it is directly awknowledged multiple times, no one actually tries to change anything. Of course there is fear of retaliation, but because the setup is a fucking high school, you cant help but feel like CERTAINLY, SOMEONE will eventually do something or face consequences, because this isnt just one class, its the ENTIRE school. And then, when an adult DOES show up in volume 2, his takeaway is that he could get in on the teen sex too!!!!!!!!
And I KNOW the concept of the story is that everyone is selfish and has darkness in them, and that some of this shit really could happen, but irl high schoolers are SOO dumb!! Well, yeah, teens are actually pretty smart, but the story also misses a lot of what makes teenagers teenagers. I usually wave that off in BL because the setting is usually just set dressing for smut but when youre actually trying to tell a story, it just doesnt feel believable. Listen. Teens can absolutely be manipulative, vindictive, evil little shitbags. But theyre also stupid and are still growing into the adults they will become, still developing their emotional and decision making brain parts. Like this idea could have gone really far but the fact that theyre in high school is really just so unimportant to the story that it feels stupid. I find myself wondering if there are classes in this school at all and how they find the time to be doing all of this bullshit.
