you summarized this story beautifully. i 100% agree on everything you said. i read this when it was still on going so i waited years to see the end, and despite the long incremental time in between of every update, i still feel tired reading it. i remember saying that the MC do not do shit but slouch and be sad, i understand his fears, but good lord he was stuck in the bottom pit for so looong. this is such a beautiful manhua; the art, symbolism, etc. everything is good other than the character development on MC.
i won't leave a long comment but i need you to understand meng hao's perspective in life as well as where he came from. he's not as rich or cultured as weiyu is. and sometimes, i'd get feelings where i would blame weiyu for the actions i get wronged for, knowing myself as a goody-two shoes who follows my family's commands. you need to understand that meng hao in the end, his parents only cared about his achievements. he rebelled and found his true self because of weiyu, which had his ups and downs. this impacted his life so much that you couldn't help but blame him.
for the person who's saying that meng hao did NOT have any development, you may say that, but season 2 college arc literally highlights how much he's changed. he rebelled. he's different. heck, he even got a new hair color to symbolize his new self. i didn't even recognize him when i read that part, and that goes to show how much he's developed. due to weiyu, he tried looking for that man in other people. however, he didn't. but i'm glad that some of his boyfriends, specifically candy, motivated him to find him, to go after him. and in the end, they did end up together.
miscommunication plays a huge role when it comes to misunderstandings in relationships, but you never know how hard it is for them, especially in their situation. meng hao has strict parents, with high expectations and punishment that will come when he doesn't follow them. and is in a society where gay people are shunned and homopobia is blatant. he's not well-off, independent, or mentally strong as weiyu. but he is weiyu's, in the way that they complement each other.
i don't support your hate for meng hao, i understand where you're coming from, but you also need to understand that there are some things to be considered why you shouldn't be frustrated at him. the complexity of characters in this manhua isn't for all. heck, even the ending is assumed to be open.

Never rereading again . I liked how this story protrayed homophobia and it's impact but other than that , I feel immensely sad for Wenyu (ML) . He deserved soooo much better. I hate the fact that no matter , how well he treated meng hao(MC) , no matter how much he loved , chased , or been there for MENG hao , he never received even half of it back . What's ironic is the way MENG hao says " Wenyu is always there for him when he is sad " but he himself never thinks about the sadness that Wenyu may feel from his actions and decisions.
MENG hao never once in his entire life choose Wenyu above everything. Meng hao was always calculating , weighing between what's rational in society and what is more important. And in his mind Wenyu was never the first choice, nor the most important. He shattered Wenyu to the core but also never stopped pinning for him . I am sooo exhausted after reading this . This story wouldn't have been so long and painful if only MENG hao was honest once , if only he had laid his heart bare once .This story wouldn't have been this long , if only he had relentlessly chased after Wenyu . Are you saying he never once visited that apartment for 3 years of college when Wenyu was just there waiting for him to reach out ? Sob . But at the last moment when Wenyu gave up on any hope and was going to fly abroad he chose to visit that apartment? Seriously almost like a toxic ex who reaches out when you at the brink of giving up . And what did he mean by saying " Don't forget me" like why ? Wasn't he the one who suggested breaking up . And for someone who suggested to break up in highschool because being gay was unacceptable in society or his parents, he sure went on many dates with other guys in college . That doesn't make sense . Why did he break up then ?
If we genuinely want to meet someone and reconcile it wouldn't take us freaking 2/3 whole years . Even crying nonstop and begging Wenyu to not leave would have worked . Even going abroad after him would have worked . But nop he did none . What there relationship lacked immensely was lack of effort from MENG hao . I am not saying MENG hao didn't love Wenyu BUT LOVE NEEDS ACTIONS and ASSURANCE.
We read this story from MC's pov , but I dare every one to imagine how painful most ML's pov be - how much devalued he most have felt , to never be chosen again and again by the person he loves the most , to be the first person his lover would break from his life if things are gonna be difficult. Just think about your bestie choosing another person above you , ML feels worse than that cuz it's his lover thats doing it .
I hope nobody, nobody not even my enemies to fall for someone who never prioritizes you .
