In countries where same sex marriage is not recognized, one adopting the other is (if I’m not wrong) the only way to become officially family. It’s kind of important if an emergency happens, for example, if one has an accident and is unconcious, the hospital informs the family first and they are the ones to make the decisions at that moment (if you have not stated the opposite before), even if you don’t get along with your actual family.
