Fuction is produced and consumed by real people and is an element of society and culture. You can tie the reasons why there is so many rape in korean romance (bl, gl, straight) to the way korea looks to sexual crimes and their deep patriarchy. Even goverments and regimes used media and fiction to desensitize the masses, because it works (caricatures, comedy shows, books, charges, animations of black people and jews for example).
