When he opened the stairs, it was clear he would not be able to get down if he climbed them. So after ignoring Grayson's protests all along, he told him he should just get out since he wasn't helping. And so Grayson did, but he thought Dane would come out eventually, seeing it was pointless and not wanting to die. So when he got out of the building, he expected Dane to follow him soon after. When he didn't, that's when they all heard a big explosion coming from the house. So they all thought Dane died until he got out of the vent
