at first, i really hated how the ex-lover acted towards the mc at the beginning cos wdym u're choosing that 6 months relationship over the one u spent almost 30yrs of ur life with? (if i was him, i would've dropped that twink immediately) but then as the story progressed, i understood how much of a good person he is and that he's the one who suffered the most imo.
imagine getting a call that ur lover went missing and not a single clue about what happened to him. he waited for him for years, no confirmation or anything—just pure hope and despair. it's not his fault that he got tired of waiting.
and then suddenly mc came back after 5yrs of nothing (not mc's fault obv) it wouldn't sink in that fast. i understand that he's completely unable to figure out what he's feeling between mc and twink. he's torn between his sense of responsibility towards twink and the grief, love, and longing, towards mc.
then it was revealed that he was manipulated and forced to have this relationship with twink bc of what happened one night AND IT WAS EVEN TWINK WHO FORCED HIM WHILE HE WAS INTOXICATED WITH ALCOHOL. that's just horrible to think about. he lost his chance to be with the mc again bc he was not aware of it. so sad :'(
i also understand the suffering mc went through, there's so much pain, but at least he found someone to love again, unlike ex-lover. it seemed like it would be hard for him to completely move on from mc ╥﹏╥
