This was way underrated. People think that if a story doesn't have unrealistically perfect characters, then it's bad writing. Most complaints I've seen are based on that thought. The MCs are both messy and messed up, the top does a LOT wrong, and the bottom's own self-belittlememt allowed it.
It is not a story about some hero saving a helpless damsel, it's a story about living with hatred and guilt. The shame and anger both characters felt was so realistically portrayed that it felt incredibly raw to the reader. It was uncomfortable and pitiable. Much of the dislike for this story probably comes from that. People like black and white, good vs evil, love the good guy and hate the bad guy. Like most of life, this story lives in the gray, and you can feel the harsh reality of that throughout reading it.
It makes this incredibly underrated because it's extremely hard to execute a character like the top that lives in a morally wrong but understandable state. It's even harder to execute a character like bottom who is mortally right, but still chosing wrong. Usually, when a writer tries this it feels fake and like the characters don't make sense. Every choice made by either character in this is realistic, or at least understandable.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely not bad writing. Oh, and the art was a little stiff but there are SO many worse drawn yaoi that get nothing but love and praise. People don't like it because the harsh reality makes them uncomfortable, the art was good enough.
