I want to start by saying that nobody is forcing anyone to read this story. It contains dark themes, and that's exactly what it is. Judging people for reading it doesn't make you morally superior, and trying to justify the characters' actions to new readers by bringing up events from the novel doesn't make those actions any less wrong.
Yes, I've read the entire novel. Yes, both characters are walking red flags. Yes, Zhenya develops later on. None of that changes the fact that the stuff he did were wrong.
That being said, the story itself is well written. In my opinion, the manhwa doesn't fully do it justice. If you're interested, give it a shot but go in knowing what you're signing up for. Based on the characters, plot, and setting, you're going to encounter some very dark themes such as coercion, R*pe, Murder, Child abuse, Child murder, Kidnapping, body modification (Yes the tattoo), cheating, choking ( consensual at some point ), etc.
At the end of the day, if you don't like it, don't read it. But don't pressure others into reading it by promising that it eventually becomes healthy, because it really doesn't.
