You're right about that, at least. Unfortunately, Riftan never meaningfully changes because the author outright avoids holding him accountable for the awful shit he's said and will do to Maxi, instead pushing incredibly forced sex between them in place of communication and genuine relationship bonding. I genuinely dislike the author for that, ngl.
