Even his "love" is something I call into question. Just how genuine is Riftan's love for Maxi? Whenever he talks about his devotion to her, it almost always comes back to her appearance rather than who she is as a person. What does he actually love about Maxi beyond the way she looks? He poetically gushes on about her freckles, her eyes, and especially her hair, but I can't think of many moments where he genuinely admires her character, her intelligence, or her strengths. If anything, the story often shows the opposite. Most of their major conflicts stem from Maxi asserting her independence, making her own decisions, or acting outside of the role Riftan has imagined for her. That's what makes his affection feel so superficial to me. He seems enamored with the *idea* of Maxi more than the reality of who she actually is. The moment she begins demonstrating traits that challenge his expectations, their relationship immediately becomes strained. To me, that doesn't suggest a deep appreciation for her as a person. It suggests an attraction that's largely surface-level at best.

I fucking hate Riftan
