I read this a month ago or something ago but I'll do my best to explain from what I remember (in honour of that till pfp). Might be wrong at times but I remember the general story flow at least. Oh and feel free to stop reading as soon as you feel like the spoilers are too much!
Rensley and Gezell (I prefer the novel spelling) spar after this and Gezell does suprisingly well in contrast to Rensley's conception of the Duke as a reclusive bookworm. They train until Ren has to give his final exam infront of a huge crown because apparently, for a cold land such as Odenlant, fights are very much in hype between the citizens. So, the big moment comes and with some kind reassurance from the Duke, Ren starts his final test which is divided into segments (2, iirc). The first one is a 1v1 spar in which he faces a knight and wins! The second is those traditional knighthood fights where two people face off upon horses with a lance. It's a heated and tough fight, but Rensley reins triumphant while doing his best to remain chivalrous! But the opponent turns out to be a sour loser and performs some sort of underhanded last ditch effort but thankfully due to timely intervention, Rensley is left mostly unscathed. Now, his knighthood is guaranteed! Ren quickly assimilates into the knight ranks and in the frozen land in general being the sunshine personification he is. He does not lose his cheerful spark at all and his relationship with the duke also advances gradually. Rensley goes out of his way and insists to attend a knight outwatch, which the Knight Commader eventually agrees to. There, he gets his first taste of how terrifying the monsters that layed in those foreign lands truly were. Bizzare bodies with equally terrifying abilities were slain one after another by the knights and while intimidated at first, Rensley quickly catches his wits and aids them in their duties. There, he finds an iniured pup and tends to it. Now regarding their relationship, Rensley is the first to realise his love for the duke. Their relationship remains unconfirmed for a period because Ren is conflicted in his new identity as a knight (which will be his future after the new Ducchess comes, or so he believes) vs his growing love for the Duke wjo treated him with kindness and gentleness he felt was far more deserving that he really was. Meanwhile, the dense Duke knew Rensley felt special to him but was also true to his position as the Duke due to which he would have to naturally get another duchess for his dukedom. One thing to note here is that the depths of this whole fiasco are much well explained in the novel and can't really be expressed in a nutshell. Imo both of their thoughts were not at all unfounded. Anyhow, both Rensley and Gezell have frequent conversations on the new life Rensley would take after the new Ducchess (and fyi, Gezell very soon scrapes the idea of a new Ducchess because it didn't feel right to him, and said that he'll just appoint a relative's child or something lol), and they have many conversations regarding their future, mostly instigated by Ren (my insecure baby) and Gezell replying like it's the most natural thing in the world. Since the Duke never knew love, he doesn't know the name of the feelings he has, while Ren with his mature wit was sure of his own feelings while also knowing that his wishful feelings are not meant to survive in the long run. Especially when he's the illegitimate prince of Cornia, and Gezell is literally the DUKE of Odenlant. Not to mention they are both males.
The practical and serious stuff aside, they are both mind meltingly sweet and their interactions WILL inject a dose of dopamine into your viens.
On one instance, Ren tries to scope out Gezell's feelings. "Do you love me?" To which Gezell honestly responds that he's unsure since he's never known what that feelings is like.
Yadi yada Rensley eventually becomes satisfied that the Duke does feel attraction to him just like he does and decides to give the very much clueless Duke a taste of the joys of eroticism.
The duke at first was not too interested. He knew in theory that sexual acts and compilation maintain the survival of a species (bless my cute, clueless child). But being whipped for Ren, he obliges to his request to be intimate and goes along with Rensley's teachings (Fyi Ren has a shitton of experience with women but 0 with men).
At first it's all alright, thinks the Duke.
But then after they get deep into the kiss, he EATS Ren tf up.
That day, my boy got to know a whole new world...
And seeing Gezell (the man he's so hopelessly in love with) so eager to reciprocate, he can't help but feel giddy and initiates more than just a kiss.
But uh...
It's also his first time with a man.
And Gezell just realised the pleasure released by his hormones and sexual gonads lmao.
So, both of them with no prior knowledge just a shitton of willpower (and love) decide to oh so wisely throw caution to the fucking wind and start the coitus.
Gezell? Oh he ABSOLUTELY digs it. A little too much actually.
Rensley? IT. HURTS. SO. FUCKING. MUCH. (duh)
So after like one round (?) of ts Ren is a sobbing mess and pleads Gezell to stop, which he later does after regaining his senses because he's so fucking horny rn.
But well after post nut clarity hits like a truck, Gezell wants nothing more than to beat himself to a pump and reprimands himself so. They unanimously decide to not attempt this again.
...Until literally a few chapter ahead these idiots find a new surge of love and willpower which makes Rensley PERSISTENTLY INSIST to try having sex again, just by taking proper steps and some time. Gezell eventually agrees.
Now, what happened after that is something I cannot hope to explain. It's the most sensual written thing I've ever read in all my years of life, so much so that the words were practically prancing in my mind and physically tinkering with my hormones. I highly recommend you to check it out after you're free!
But anyways, the gist is that they're successful this time. Yay.
Ahhhhh that goddamn divorce arc was so frustrating... Now, I read this months ago so I can't say I remember everything with clarity but lemme summarise all that I can recall.
Soooo Ren at one point thinks it's high time he runs tf away from the duke because they're all over each other lately and the hurt of seeing his man get married with another would shatter him apart completely. Gezell and Rensley talked about how their relationship should proceed while considering that Gezell is the Duke and the dukedom would want an actuall Duchess instead of a fake one like him who can't even bear an heir or something. And Gezell was adamant about still having Ren close to him no matter how things turned out because he started to realise how deep his feelings ran for the man. But Rensley, unsatisfied with how he can't give Gezell everything he would need to satisfy him and his dukedom (the phrasing is weird i hope ykwim) was also seriously insecure with seeing his lover with another, understandably so. So uh, during a ball, he stages an escape where he's found out just at the border of the state (?) by the Duke's right hand man (yes THAT knight) but he lets him go because he sees how resolutely Rensley wants to let go and inwardly he tries to convince himself that Ren leaving is for the best (for the Duke, Rensley and the dukedom). Oh boy was he proven wrong in just hours because as soon as Gezell found out Rensley ran away, he tirelessly send search teams again and again to find him desperately. He was losing sleep and peace and wanted nothing more than having Rensley come back to him. He tried to understand Rensley's reasons and got to know how hurt he must've been to go to these lengths. He became excessively worried about Ren because the path of his escape (which he estimated was through a forest) lead to dead ends from a waterfall and he got so scared that Rensley was hurt or...even worse, dead. But he avoided acknowledging the red flag and did all sorts of black magic-esque things to get his man back, hurting himself a lot in the process. One thing I remember here was that while Gezell was searching for clues on whereto find Rensley, he stumbles upon a diary that the servants found near the halls of the ballroom and he finds out that it was a personal diary/rough notebook in which Ren tried to write a letter for Gezell to inform him about his leave but ultimately scratched most of the contents out (Gezell desperately did his best to piece together whatever was intelligible) and he saw a drawing of a bear with his name attached and was saddened to think that Ren thought of him as a scary carnivore and predator but this was just silly and lowk funny to see as a reader because you could all but tell that Rensley found the similiarities cute and that he didn't even know how beard were actually like in nature (he just thought they were cute and fluffy, and we get to know this after they reunite lmao). Soo, Gezell breaks down inside the greenhouse (that he built for Ren btw to store all kinds of flora like Tomatoes that Rensley really wanted to eat again) haha...!
Anyhow while Gezell was absolutely losing his shit seeing Ren's tracks end at a waterfall all the while his black magic shit couldn't find him (despite being highly potent and extremely riskful for Gezell, but it guarenteed results so Gezell didn't gaf about his own health in his pursuit ofc). You'll deadass never guess where Rensley actually was. While Gezell had his biggest panic attack of his life and arguably was going through the worst moment of his life, Rensley was in a pocket dimension with some cute divine (?) beings. Like your man has diagnosed anxiety now boo get your mans back...
HOW he stumbled upon this btw was that while he was running away from the search team on his ass, he realised that he could walk on the surface before the waterfall dip like there was some sort of surface stairs there. Yadi yada, he enters the hidden dimension which just happens to be of the mother of a child Ren had previously rescued in his first monster excursion in Odenlant (which he mistook for a puppy or something at first, I mentioned this in the summary I originally wrote) and there he loafs around for a while with these mythical beings and shares some of his burdens with the mother there who's best described as an aloof ruler of her dimension with a subtle curiosity for humans. There she hints that Rensley has more to him than he can see, which he dismisses because what even is he without his self-deprecate nature. So he stays there for a day or two (?) and eventually manages to persuade the being to drop him off somewhere in the outskirts of Odenlant as she tells him that he's welcome to come back and even stay forever with her and her child if he wants to (Ren politely declines ofc).
When Ren gets back, he's in for a world of shock. Apparently he has a BOUNTY on his name now lmao and posters about wanting him ALIVE and back to the Duke are all over the fucking kingdom. Sooo he's seen sooner or later and he very coolu escapes all the people on his ass chasing him cuz he's badass as fuck. While he's running tf away he escapes to a cart with hay or something and one way or another he finds himself facing the man person who was running that cart and suprisingly, that old man was fine with it all. He invited Ren to his house and both him and his wife also his child were all very welcoming of him despite not being well-off. That melts his heart and when he gets to know that they need money for their daughter's recovery, he promises to pay them back for their hospitality and kindness and was about to mail or something to Odenlant to the Duke to tell him to take care of these people or something but when he gets there to relay the message to a teleportation site or whatnot, he finds out that all ways into the dukedom are sealed because war has waged.
Rensley now freaks out because he genuinely cares for that land and it's people. He has friends and acquaintances there and most importantly his lover that he left. So he bypasses the security and runs to the battlefield.
What happens after that was a reveal so shocking i dont even knew could happen. I highly advise you to read it yourself because it's so well written my god.
The gist is, Ren comes back and fights back with everyone and by the end of the fight, both him and Gezell reunites during which Gezell says he's unsightly and scarred so Rensley shouldn't approach his hideous self right now. That kind of breaks Rensley and he follws Gezell despite his persuasion not to and they both talk about their reunion and have hot steamy sex immediately after. One of the peakest scenes in the novel imo. Anyhow, that's all about their divorce arc :3
