That is literally the bare minimum and doesn’t mean that this isn’t a racist depiction. The author took more care in trying to show how nice her white man MC is instead of focusing on how he just uprooted the lives of former slaves and sent them packing into the unknown to go find their possibly dead or still enslaved family members. Reminder that the end of the war did not just stop slavery and many slaves didn’t even know they were free for years. This releasing days after Juneteenth and having to be explained is so sad.
