slavery is not something that should be romanticized It’s disrespectful to create a story about an enslaved person falling in love with their owner when real people were subjected to abuse, violence, dehumanization and even death under slavery. Portraying that kind of relationship as a romance ignores the reality of what enslaved people endured. A similar example would be portraying a Holocaust victim falling in love with the person responsible for their imprisonment. It minimizes the suffering of real people and turns a horrific part of history into a love story which is honestly just disgusting. If this was made in a different universe it would’ve been fine and no one would bat an eye but this is something that actually happened. I’m glad the author realized it.
